Here are Some Reasons Why You Should Not Ignore a Chipped Tooth

If you have a chipped tooth and only view it as a cosmetic dental issue, you may have decided not to get it treated. However, the truth is that a chipped tooth can lead to several dental health problems when left untreated. Dr. Vidya Suri and the team at Frisco Elm Dental welcome you in to have your chipped tooth repaired. If you are still on the fence about getting your chipped tooth repaired, you should be aware of some of the dental problems which could arise if you choose not to get treatment.

Consequences of an Untreated Chipped Tooth

Aside from being kind of funny looking, there are actual consequences of a chipped tooth which can become a problem if you do not get it fixed.

Cuts in the Mouth

When you chip a tooth, that tooth will likely have a sharp edge that could lacerate your tongue, cheek, or gums. This can result in painful wounds, making eating, drinking, and talking a challenge.

Sensitivity

When a tooth is chipped, a piece of the protective enamel will be missing. Over time, this could lead to tooth decay. Additionally, the chip could expose the inner nerves of the tooth. This will result in increased tooth sensitivity which could be heightened when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic food and drink.

Your Tooth Could Break

A chipped tooth could easily lead to a break due to the tooth being weakened. If you chew on hard foods, the risk of a chipped tooth breaking is increased. When a tooth breaks, more extensive treatment will be necessary for a complete restoration, whereas treating a chipped tooth could be a more straightforward process.

Infection

When you have a chipped tooth, especially a deep chip, your tooth can become more susceptible to bacteria entering the inner tooth. This will inevitably lead to infection, damage, and eventual abscess of the pulp and root. If this occurs, you can expect a painful toothache and will likely need treatment, including a root canal or (in the worst cases) extraction.
