Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Little Elm - A Sleeping Woman

Dr. Suri understands that visits to the dentist can be extremely stressful for some people, and that there are many who avoid getting the dental care they need due to fears related to dentistry. At Frisco Elm Dental, we want our patients to know that we have their best interest in mind. If you have avoided dental care because you have had an unpleasant experience or because dentistry just makes you uncomfortable, contact our friendly office staff to discuss your options for sedation.

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful way for anxious people to feel calm and confident while receiving necessary treatment. The use of a safe, effective sedative makes it possible for many patients to receive pain-free, stress-free dental care. Sedation is also beneficial for those who would like to complete multiple treatments in a single visit. At Frisco Elm Dental, we are happy to offer our patients options for either nitrous oxide sedation or oral conscious sedation, each of which has a comfortable calming effect.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is one of the oldest forms of sedation in modern medicine and dentistry. This mild sedative has no odor, but many people do report a pleasant taste. Referred to as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide has an effect on the central nervous system that leads many patients to feel not only calm but extremely happy. There are several advantages to this form of sedation. The effects of nitrous oxide are felt very quickly after delivery begins through a small nasal mask. A light sedative, nitrous does not cause patients to sleep through treatment. Should you choose this form of sedation, you will be able to communicate with our staff as needed throughout your appointment. The effects of nitrous subside quickly as we reduce its concentration. After treatment, most patients are able to drive themselves home safely.

Oral conscious sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves a prescription medication such as Versed, Ativan, Halcion, or Valium. Taken before dental visits, carefully selected sedatives calm the action of the central nervous system and allow the patient to receive care calmly and comfortably. Oral conscious sedation is safe and effective for most patients and is prescribed based on a comprehensive consultation and medical history review. The effects will remain for several hours. As such, it is necessary to arrange reliable transportation to and from dental appointments and to schedule visits at a time when the remainder of the day can be spent resting at home.

You don't have to avoid the dentist any longer, nor do you have to feel anxious during visits. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Suri to discuss your options for sedation.
