Save your tooth with root canal therapy from your Frisco, TX dentist
As a dentist, few things elicit as many negative reactions as the mention of needing a root canal. Root canals are a safe and effective treatment that is very similar to having a traditional cavity filling. In the many years she’s spent as a dentist in Frisco, TX, Dr. Suri has helped save many natural teeth with the help of root canal therapy – eliminating pain and restoring their ability to enjoy life as fast as possible.
What is root canal therapy?
Often simply referred to as a root canal, the procedure is performed when the pulp chamber of the tooth has become damaged and infected. During a root canal, the infected pulp, nerves, and blood vessels are removed in order to save the natural tooth structure and avoid unnecessary extraction.
The most common reasons for root canals are:
- Injury to the tooth
- A cavity that has spread to the innermost portion of the tooth
- A tooth infection
What to expect with root canal therapy
Most patients who need a root canal first come to the office because of a painful toothache. During the examination, x-rays are taken of the tooth to determine if a root canal is needed.
Here are several of the warning signs that you may require root canal treatment:
- Persistent pain – The pain can be constant or intermittent and it may be in the area of the infected tooth or radiate out in the face or jaw.
- Sensitivity to hot and cold – You may notice the sensitivity feels like a sharp pain or a dull ache.
- Tooth discoloration – Infection inside the tooth can cause it to look grayish-black.
- Swollen gums – The swelling may or may not be painful the touch.
- Cracked or chipped tooth – Injury can damage the nerves of the tooth.
Once it’s determined that a root canal is needed, you may be prescribed an antibiotic to take prior to treatment. On the day of the root canal, the dentist will access the pulp chamber of the tooth to remove the infected pulp tissue and nerves. Next, the area is completely cleaned and sanitized and then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta percha. The final step is to seal the opening and place a dental crown over the treated tooth for long term protection and to restore functionality.
Preventing a root canal procedure
While root canals are a safe and highly effective treatment, it is still important to do what you can to prevent needing one. This includes developing good oral hygiene habits that will keep your teeth healthy such as:
- Brushing your teeth at least twice daily
- Flossing at least once each day
- Maintaining routine dental exams every six months
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet low in processed foods and sugar
