If you have a wisdom tooth, Dr. Vidya Suri recommends removal before it causes pain and puts you at risk of infection. A wisdom tooth that has erupted above the gum line can be removed through a simple extraction. However, if it’s trapped (impacted) beneath the gums, you may need a surgical tooth extraction.
Like any surgery, you need post-operative care after wisdom tooth removal to minimize recovery time and chances of pain, swelling, and infections. Frisco Elm Dental offers comprehensive dental care before, during, and after wisdom tooth removal treatment. Below are tips to ensure you have an event-free recovery after wisdom tooth extraction.
Slight bleeding from the surgical site isn’t uncommon after surgical extraction. To minimize bleeding, place a gauze pad on the surgical area and bite over it for 30 minutes. You can also reduce bleeding by minimizing your activity level and staying upright.
While the wisdom tooth removal treatment isn’t painful in itself, post-treatment pain is expected, especially after the anesthesia wears off. Over-the-counter painkillers can help reduce the pain. If the pain doesn’t go away or increase after a few days, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our dental office.
You will likely develop swelling in your gums and cheeks after the surgery. This is your body’s natural response to the surgery. You can manage this by putting a cold compress on your cheeks. After about 36 hours, you can change to moist heat. Your swelling should subside in less than a week, but if this isn’t the case, call your dentist.
You must maintain optimal oral hygiene to avoid infections. Clean your teeth as you usually do but be gentle around the surgical site. We recommend rinsing your mouth with warm, salty water at least 5-6 times daily, especially after meals.
